My Story

“Inspirations and strengths to share with the invention of Polly, Rufus, and Sergio.”

This is my story and what inspired me to write about bullying. As a teenager, I experienced bullying in high school. I was teased and taunted regarding the color of my skin. I was called many names, including yellow girl, Indian girl, white girl, and two tone. Most of the time, if I was not being teased about my complexion, I was being threatened that I would be beaten up. Unfortunately , this was an on-going occurrence.

My circle of friends was small. I would never share this pain with my parents, including my siblings. I was just embarrassed and ashamed. In the 1950’s, when I was growing up bullying was prevalent. Bullying was not talked about, it was kept inside. There was never an option to tell a teacher, tell your parents, or seek help from someone close to you. Retaliation was your enemy. You endured the pain.

This is what laid the foundation for my books, Sergio and Polly. Both of these characters were faced with bullying. Sergio and his family were being intimidated by a huge snake, who wanted to destroy and wipe out his whole family. Polly was snubbed as an outcast by her peers. This was due to the way Polly looked and because she was different.

Bullying can steal your joy. It causes low self-esteem, it makes you fearful, ashamed, and unimportant to everyone. It makes you doubt your peace of mind and your values. I understand, I felt that pain.

I wish I could positively say that bullying only existed in our youthful and teenager years, unfortunately I witness bullying in the workplace. Cliques still exist. Bullying isn’t just among co-workers and upper management but with customers. Bullying happens to everyone, it does not discriminate.

My inspiration to write about Sergio and Polly’s plight is that bullying is still occurring among children and adult’s today. God gave me the insight and courage to tell my story and with his strength and vision, I am able to draw from feelings that I had suppressed many years ago.

Love,
Robbin
